In previous blogs we discussed what an external halyard flagpole was and what an internal halyard winch based flagpole was, and the parts included. That flagpole has a cable and winch in the flagpole, while the cam action flagpole is a little simpler. So, what is an internal halyard cam action cleat flagpole?

What is a “cam action” flagpole?
A cam action flagpole has a cam cleat mounted on the inside of the flagpole behind a locked door. The rope goes behind the cleat, clamping it down so it does not move. This is our preferred internal halyard flagpole because it is easy to operate, and replacing parts is much more affordable. There is no special cable that goes in the flagpole, it is the same rope used on an external halyard flagpole.
What parts do you need for an internal halyard cam action flagpole?
Ornament
The decorative piece at the top of the flagpole completes the look of the flagpole. The most common ornament is the gold ball. This is what every flagpole comes with unless otherwise specified. Another option is an eagle or different colored ball ornaments.
Truck
The truck on a cam action flagpole can either be stationary or revolving. The revolving truck is an enclosed truck that the rope is fed through a slot to go inside the truck and comes out another slot to the outside. The stationary truck is open at the bottom and has two pulleys for the rope to be fed inside the flagpole and another to be fed outside the flagpole.
Rope
The rope goes through the pulley to bring the flag up and down. The snap hooks attach to the rope which then attaches the flag.
Snap Hooks
We use swivel, zinc plated snap hooks. As mentioned above, the snap hooks attach the flag to the rope. You will typically need at least two snap hooks depending on the size of the flag. The larger the flag, the more snap hooks you will need. These are usually worn through quicker than other parts on the flagpole and will need to be replaced more often.
Snap Hook Covers
The rubber snap hook covers go over the snap hook to reduce noise and wear on the flagpole from the snap hooks hitting the flagpole.
Weight
The weight is attached below the flag with the retainer ring to keep the rope taught. It also helps bring the flag down the flagpole.
Retainer Ring
The retainer ring keeps the flag attached to the flagpole at the bottom of the rope on the outside. They are little balls attached to a cable wrapped around the flagpole.
Cam Action Cleat
As mentioned at the beginning of this, the cleat is behind a locked door. It clamps down on the rope to keep the rope in place. If this ever breaks, it is easy and affordable to replace.
