The most recognizable way to fly a flag on a flagpole is with only one flag, the American flag. However, we are often asked “How do I fly two flags on my flagpole?”. And the answer depends on a few factors. What size flagpole do you have and what flags do you want to fly? We want to be sure the flags are not too heavy for the flagpole and are proportional.
What Size Flagpole do you have?
If you have a 15 ft or 20 ft flagpole, you will likely need to have the same size main flag as the 2nd flag. Or size down your second flag. If you have a 25 ft flagpole or taller you may need to size down your main flag to fly your second flag.
Why Would I Fly Two Flags?
If you want to show state pride, your allegiance to your military branch, market your company, or to support your favorite sports team, you will likely fly a second flag. One of the most common variations of flags we see is an American flag with a state flag. Other popular second flags are military branch flags or a POW flag, custom company flags, custom family crests, and sport flags. More often than not, the main flag will be an American flag.
What Size Flags Should I Fly?
Here is a chart to help figure out what size flags to fly from your flagpole.
| Flagpole Height | 1st Flag | 2nd Flag |
| 15 ft | 3’x5’ | 2’x3’ |
| 20 ft | 3’x5’ | 3’x5’ or 2’x3’ |
| 25 ft | 4’x6’ | 3’x5’ |
| 30 ft | 5’x8’ | 4’x6’ |
| 35 ft | 6’x10’ | 5’x8’ |
| 40 ft | 8’x12’ | 5’x8’ |
| 50 ft | 10’x15’ | 6’x10’ |
| 70 ft | 12’x18’ | 8’x12’ |
What Do I Need to Add a Second Flag to my Flagpole?
With a rope-based flagpole, typically an external halyard flagpole or cam action internal halyard flagpole, you can add snap hooks to the rope and fly your second flag. If you have an internal halyard flagpole with cable, you would need another flag arranger to fly your second flag. The flag arranger size you need will depend on the size of flag you are flying. Now, if you have a telescoping flagpole, you will want to reach out to the manufacturer or the company you bought the flagpole from to get the correct parts to fly the second pole.
